The Power of One Restarted Heart

Every second counts when a heart stops. The difference between tragedy and survival often comes down to whether someone nearby knows how to perform CPR or use an AED. Today, October 16, marks World Restart a Heart (WRAH) Day — a global initiative led by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and supported by organizations like the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada. The goal? To raise awareness about cardiac arrest and empower everyone — not just healthcare professionals — to save a life.

What Is World Restart a Heart Day?

World Restart a Heart Day is an annual campaign that shines a light on one simple truth: CPR saves lives. Across the globe, millions join together to learn and share the skills needed to restart a heart. At Saving Grace Medical Academy, we’re proud to stand alongside Heart & Stroke in this mission — helping more people gain the confidence to act in an emergency.

When someone collapses from cardiac arrest, their chance of survival decreases by 10% for every minute without CPR. Early CPR and defibrillation can double or even triple survival rates.

Why This Matters in Canada

Every year, more than 40,000 Canadians experience cardiac arrest, and roughly 85% of these emergencies happen at home. That means the life you save could be someone you love — a family member, a friend, or even a child.

The reality is that many bystanders hesitate because they’re unsure what to do. That’s why training matters. Whether it’s Basic Life Support (BLS), Standard First Aid, or CPR with AED, knowledge is the key to action.

🧠 Home Treatment and Self-Care

While cardiac arrest always requires emergency intervention, you can reduce your personal risk through lifestyle care:

  • Exercise regularly — 30 minutes a day supports heart strength.

  • Eat heart-healthy — focus on whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables.

  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol — both increase cardiovascular strain.

  • Know your numbers — monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.

  • Take a CPR course — preparedness is the best prevention.
