Remembrance Day Tribute: Honoring Our Heroes

Today, we pause for a Remembrance Day Tribute to remember the brave men and women who stood for freedom, justice, and peace — those who gave everything so that we could live in a nation unshackled by tyranny.

Among them was my great-grandfather, Andy Tschetter, a humble farm boy from Northern Alberta near Hythe, raised between the Hinton and Jasper area. He enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II, leaving behind his young wife and the son he would not meet until four years later — my grandfather, Ramon Tschetter.

A treasured family photo featuring Great Grandfather Andy Tschetter (far left) and his wife Leda Tschetter, standing proudly beside relatives and friends near their Alberta home — a glimpse into the family roots of courage, love, and resilience that shaped generations.

Andy served first with the infantry and later as a sniper, enduring the horrors of chemical warfare that left him with lifelong injuries and the invisible wounds of PTSD. Yet, when he came home, he chose to live in kindness — becoming a school bus driver, sharing his warmth, and showing love to the children of the very peace he helped defend.

Though I was young when I met him, I’ll never forget the quiet strength and gentle compassion he carried. His story — like so many others — reminds us that freedom has a price, and that courage often comes from the most ordinary of hearts.

The official Statement of Service for Andrew (Andy) Tschetter, who served in the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II. This document stands as a testament to his unwavering courage — a life contract to protect his fellow Albertans and Canadians, both known and unknown, with his own life.

My grandfather Ramon Tschetter and I were the only two men in our family who did not go to war, and for that, I must honor my Great Grandfathers’ sacrifice. I would not be alive and living the way I do now without their strength, courage, and sacrifice. They gave up their lives, their hearts, their laughter, and their joy so that we here in Alberta — and across Canada — could live free.

Today, we honor Andy Tschetter and all those who served and sacrificed so that Alberta — and all of Canada — could remain free.

We at Saving Grace Medical Academy proudly stand with our veterans and active service members.
